Celebrate Easter in Copenhagen like a local
The sun is shining and we are super excited that spring is here as we celebrate Easter here in Copenhagen.
Easter is on its way and where better to celebrate than Denmark's capital of food and fun? Our fab city is a great Easter destination with the city covered in spring blossom and a world of delicious food to sample and traditional strong Easter beer to celebrate!
Us folks of Copenhagen know how to have fun and while many Easter traditions of the past were serious rather than celebratory, the Danes have always had a spring in their step when it comes to Easter fun.
Get a lucky kiss for your poem
For many years, the Danes have celebrated this special time of year with the tradition of sending a gækkebrev. This is a rhyming anonymous poem which is cut out of white paper in the pattern of a snowflake. These notes were in times gone by, sent with the first flower of spring, a Snowdrop. Each letter is signed with a number of dots to hint at the number of letters in the sender’s name, if you guess the sender you are given an Easter egg, in past times you would get lucky with a kiss!
Easter Lunch
With Copenhagen reputation as a global leader on the culinary stage, it’s no surprise that this city has a wealth of delectable dishes to tempt the taste buds this Easter but beware, in many places the Easter period is a time for the Danes to take a holiday from work!
Friends and family get together for påskefrokost, or Easter lunch, if you’re lucky enough to be invited to one of these meals then go for it- it’s a great way to get to know the Danes for an all-day session of eating, drinking and good company.
Traditionally people prepare and eat spring dishes like chicken and lamb and of course Danish specialities like herrings, meats and fragrant cheeses and of course eggs! There is a Southern Danish speciality of solaeg, or Sun Egg when eggs are boiled with onions so that the yolk turns dark.
If you’re not tempted by the food then there’s a world of schnapps and specially brewed Easter Beer, renowned for its strength and delicious flavour to wash it all down all this amazing food.
Throw your egg!
For entertainment why not join the locals and take a decorated egg with you to throw with your friends to see whose egg can be thrown the furthest? Or simply tuck into some well-deserved candy- strictly not just for kids, the Danes are Europe’s second highest consumers of candy!
So come and stay and enjoy some of our Danish traditions this Easter - decorate an egg, try the beer, and make new friends!
