Enjoy Copenhagen's Awesome Beaches this Summer

Summer is officially here and the temperature is rising here in Copenhagen. We can't wait for the weekend to head to the beach! Get your bikini or shorts ready and check out the amazing and clean local beaches just a stone's throw from the city, from Amager Strand a few metro stops away to the beautiful Bellevue Beach. And of course, we have a city beach at our Harbour Baths right in the city center and open all day and night.

If you have a bit more time and are staying longer in the city, you can enjoy Hellerup Beach just to the north of the city, or to Hundige Strandpark near the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art. But if you're on a quick trip, then here are our top 3 beach tips for beating the heat in Copenhagen!

The Harbour Baths - Brygge Island

Cool of in this clean sea water - in the baths in Copenhagen! This might sound a little crazy but the canal water here has been used to create bathing areas which are clean and monitored everyday to keep them that way.

The Harbour Baths at Brygge Island are the perfect place to chill while still staying in the city, with picnic areas, sunbathing space and swimming zones to take a dip. The baths can be reached on the metro just 10 minutes from the city center, or if you have a bike, you can cycle there easily too.

From 1st June until September, these inner city harbour baths are open throughout the day to provide a designated swim and picnic spot. There are different size and depth pools to choose from and a choice of diving boards from beginner height boards to daring high jumps. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sunshine while the weather is good! Find out more about the baths here

Get active with watersports in Copenhagen

If you're into kayaking or stand up paddle (SUP) or even windsurfing there are plenty of places to try this out, with kayak tours around the city's canals and windsurfing on the lagoon at Amager Beach, just 15 minutes metro from the center of the city.

Amager Strand

Just a short metro ride away from the city center (10-15 minutes on the M2 towards the airport) you can find the natural stretch of beach that is Amager Strand. Here you can find a lagoon with warmer water and water sports in the shallows, such as SUP and kayaking, and beyond the sand dunes is a long stretch of sandy beach with a pier to jump off. This beach is over 4km long so there is space for everyone even on a hot and busy day. You only have to walk 5 minutes from the station and then either choose the lagoon or the sandy beach stretch. There is a view of the windmill park from the sand, or the lagoon side has more trees and is more sheltered on a breezy day.
There are plenty of places to buy ice cream but not lots of restaurants, but this is an ideal place to have a picnic, so bring your own! The lagoon side is the place to enjoy water sports and you can hire kayaks and windsurf boards here and the lagoon is fairly shallow. There are also some shady areas on the shore side when it's super hot, and some soft sand to enjoy.
The best thing about Amager Strand is that it is so close to the city and easy to reach, but also surrounded by green trees and natural sand dunes. It's a great spot to explore and a really popular day out of town for locals and tourists alike.

Amager Strand

Svanemøllestranden

This an urban beach in Østerbro which was made in 2010. This beach has a great pier stretching out 120 meters into the water to jump off and the beach itself is sandy and sandwiched between the promenade and the sea. This beach is super central for city dwellers, and gets busy as it's also quite small, and much less glamorous than the other beaches as it has a view of the power station! But it's handy to have a dip to cool off and super easy to get to.

Bellevue Beach

Just outside Copenhagen there's the idyllic Bellevue Beach at Klampenborg, landscaped in the 1930s to provide public space. This beach is gorgeous with lawns leading down to the white sand and clusters of trees to provide shade. It also has changing rooms that were designed by famous architect Arne Jacobsen! This is popular with locals as it's easy to reach from the city but still a good day trip location. It's around 10km from the city so a little further away. You can reach the beach with a short walk from Klampenborg S-train station and from Dyrehaven station. This is a very scenic beach but much smaller than the 4km stretch at Amager Strand.
