Visiting the Beach in Copenhagen this Summer

The awesome weather we're having here in Copenhagen this month has inspired us to hit the beach early this summer. Here's how to make the most of the hot weather in the city and get your swim suit on!! The best local places to swim are the Harbour Baths at Islands Brygg, Amager Strand, and Bellevue Beach, but if you have more time chceck out Hellerup Beach just north of the city or to Hundige Strandpark near the ARKEN Museum of Modern Art.

Watersports in Copenhagen

If you're into kayaking or stand up paddle (SUP) or even windsurfing there are plenty of places to try this out, with kayak tours around the city's canals and windsurfing on the lagoon at Amager Beach, just 15 minutes metro from the center of the city.

Harbour Baths at Islands Brygge

Using the canal water to create bathing areas, the Harbour Baths at Brygge Island are the perfect place to cool off in the city, with picnic areas, chill out space and swimming zones to take a dip. The baths can be reached on the metro just 10 minutes from the city center, or if you have a bike, you can cycle there!

Open from 1st June until September, these inner city harbour baths are open all day for locals and visitors to enjoy and cool down in these hot temperatures! There are different size and depth pools to choose from and a choice of diving boards from beginner height to daring jumps. Bring a picnic and enjoy the sun from the sidelines if cool water swimming isn't your thing. Find out more here

Amager Strand Copenhagen

Just a short metro ride (10-15 minutes on the M2 towards the airport from the center of Copenhagen) takes you to the beautiful sand dunes and lagoon of Amager Strand. This beach is over 4km long so even on a busy day you can find yourself a great spot to have some beach fun. From the station it's just a 5 minute walk to the bridge over the lagoon, then on to the sand dunes and beach itself. You can choose whether to be on the sea front where there is more of a breeze and a pier to jump off (the sea is fairly shallow here) and a view of the windmill park from the sand, or to be on the lagoon side which is more sheltered.

On the lagoon side there are grassy banks to sit on and enjoy a picnic (and shops to buy ice creams and drinks), and the water is warmer as it forms a shallow lake. This is the place to enjoy watersports and you can hire kayas and windsurf boards here to travel up and down the lagoon. There is a sandy shore and it's ideal for just enjoying sunbathing and taking a dip, or for those with young children as there is plenty of shade and a soft sandy beach to the lagoon.

The beach at Amager Strand is so close to the city but also makes you feel like you are in nature, with lush green trees and natural sand dunes to explore. This is very popular with locals at the weekend but an idyllic spot on a sunny day in Copenhagen.

Bellevue Beach

Around 10km from Copenhagen there's the Bellevue Beach at Klampenborg. This is a little further from town but a great place for a day trip and super popular with locals. You can reach the beach with a short walk from Klampenborg S-train station and from Dyrehaven station. This beach is a lot smaller than Amager strand but is very scenic!
