What to see and do in Copenhagen in the Autumn

Denmark is the home of all things 'hygge' and that means we really know how to get cosy, light some candles, and make the most of the nights getting longer and the temperatures falling. We had a great summer so it's time to say goodbye and enjoy the autumn leaves falling and the festivals that are coming up. Get your hot chocolate ready (or enjoy a warm wine) and wrap up for some beautiful autumn days in Copenhagen. We have parks not to miss, Halloween, Kulturnatten and plenty of cool things to see and do.

What to do in Copenhagen in Autumn

Kulturnatten (Culture Night)
12th October

The Kulturnatten (or Culture Night) creates the city's biggest annual event as cultural shows and events take place all over the city in one evening. 12th October sees museums, the zoo, planetarium, theatres and concert venues open until late with special exhibitions and events. There are over 700 events in over 250 places around the city, so there are plenty of things to grab your interest - lots of them are free once you have the Culture Pass.

The idea is to represent the city's culture in many ways and in many places - and to inspire people. Check out our article on it to find out about the programme of events.

To attend the events you need to get a Culture Pass, which you can find here

Halloween at Tivoli

Tivoli is Copenhagen's most loved amusement park and is right in the city centre. It's a magical time at Christmas with its decorations and lights, but it's also great to visit in Autumn. There's a Giant Pumpkin competition taking place, a special Monsters Night and of course Trick or Treat!

Tivoli is full of attractions, rides and events (aswell as some great restaurants and shops) but for Halloween it is dressed for harvest with a spooky twist!! There are hay bails, autumnal displays and thousands of pumpkins. Along with plenty of activities for kids, there are also lots of cool things to do and special Halloween events to get involved with. Check out what’s happening at Tivoli here

Autumn in the Park

Copenhagen is such a green city we have plenty of parks for you to enjoy the change of season. Enjoy the sunny days and turning of the leaves in our favourite urban nature spots.

For a break in the center of town then try the free Botanical Garden which has a lake and landscaping along with specialised plant houses with a large display of cacti and tropical plants.

Fælledsparken

This big park is more like a nature park - located between Nørrebro and Østerbro, right behind the main hospital, Rigshospitalet. Our favorite feature is the lake and secret paths through the trees but there is also a skate park and the usual recreational areas.

Østre Anlæg

This park is right above the botanical garden and just behind the National Gallery of Denmark. This park has lots of lakes and is one of our favorites for a woodland escape from the city.

Museums for Rainy Days!

Autumn days mean sometimes we get some rainy ones - so why not try one of Copenhagen's many world class museums? Here are some of our favourites - note that the Museum of Copenhagen is closed until 2019 as it's moving to a new location!

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Free on Sundays

Part of the Carlsberg foundation and cultural commitment to Copenhagen, this museum has a world famous collection from around the world including a generous one from ancient Egypt. There is also an indoor peaceful garden which is perfect on a cold and rainy day. And it's right by our hostel!

National Gallery of Denmark

Denmark’s largest art museum and galley with pieces dating back to the 14th century.
