Why Copenhagen is so Magical at Christmas

We do the whole yuletide thing better than most - we sometimes have snow, and we always have markets, mulled wine, and super cosy Scandinavian style! If there's one good thing about being a little colder than some of our friends in Europe, it's that we can do Christmas right - crisp cold days, festive cheer and wrapping up warm with a hot drink. Christmas in Copenhagen really is something a little magical (and not just for the kids who believe in Christmas elves.)

Christmas Markets

There are Christmas markets open all over town from the most amazing Tivoli Gardens (and 27 fun fair rides) to the alternative markets in Christiania - a less conventional Christmas bazaar. There is also a market at the picturesque port of Nyhavn where there is food and drink as well as entertainment until 23rd december and in the famous Kronborg Castle. Not everyone has a castle, let alone a Christmas market in it...

Tivoli Gardens

From November until December 31st

If you’re looking for a real Christmas experience then don’t miss out on visiting Tivoli Gardens this December. It doesn’t get much more festive than this as decorations and fake snow create a winter wonderland right in the centre of Copenhagen. Open from now until New Year’s Eve, Tivoli is packed full of market stalls, fun fair rides and Christmas trees! Just follow the smell of roasting nuts and hot mulled wine and you’ll find the delicious traditional food and drinks.

For Christmas and New Year there is also a huge firework display - one not to miss!

Glögg

Mulled Wine glögg to us - and it's delicious. Made with nuts, sultanas and spices, it's a mulled wine that gives you festive cheer on the coldest of days! We also have hot apple cider which is also spiced and delicious- a reason to come in itself! You can even throw a dash of brandy or rum in for good measure.

Delicious Danish Food!

Not just roast pork - but that's a main feature - how did you guess?
The traditional Danish Christmas meal is on 24th December and is roast pork, boiled potatoes, red cabbage (or sometimes duck or goose). It's a great time for baking and there are lots of ginger biscuits and other treats around Christmas, as well as a hot rice pudding with almonds hidden in (for lucky presents) or cold with a hot cherry sauce. Hmmm, delicious.
