We are super excited about the Copenhagen Down Under project, and have spoken to architects SpaceLab about what we can expect from the new space. Betina Steensgaard tells us how they are transforming the space along with design team ArtRebels and what they will unveil on 1st May!
So Tell Us About Building Copenhagen Down Under..
"Copenhagen Downtown has a huge basement space that up until now it has been used for their office and storage, but now they are turning 150 m2 of that into a super cool party/ lounge chill out space.
ArtRebels and Spacelab have worked on a concept for Copenhagen Down Under, which facilitates different functions. We have divided the big space in small areas supporting different needs. For example we made a cosy bio lounge area, where Downtown can show movies and sports matches for their guests, and we will build a stage for live music. During the daytime the stage will turn in to a big kind of daybed where guests can hang out and relax. Down Under is also a space for social activities among the guests. We made space for a pool table and a table football, as in the bar upstairs. And of course there is a bar. The final design is still a secret, but we have had some ideas and in the coming weeks we will be ready with a design concept. We are also planning to place a big container with a long table in the basement.”
We can’t wait to see the container transformed!
What was the most important part of the project?
"The most important part of the project is the atmosphere. We want to create a cosy and welcoming feel in Copenhagen Down Under, while keeping it cool and underground. We will continue the retro feel from the existing bar, but the raw basement also inspired us to work with a rough expression. This enabled us to work with and highlight all the industrial details and emphasize materials such as concrete, bricks and metal. The furnishing will be a mix of old retro furniture, sofas made of old trollies and new cool designs."
"From the existing bar area, you will be invited Down Under. A cool entrance and stairwell decorated by Art Rebels and a local artist will then lead you to the new space. The wall illustrations as well as the internal design will be humorous and with a playful attitude."
What's going to the be the best feature about the new space? (We hear there is a really long bar…)
"I am so existed about bringing a container Down Under. I think it will add an urban atmosphere to the space. There is already a long bar upstairs but the new one will be cool."
SpaceLab have collaborated with Artrebel to create this project together, tell us why you're a great team..
"Personally this is the first time that I have worked with ArtRebels and I enjoyed it a lot. At Spacelab we are strong in the architectural and interial design field. We work with needs and intentions in spaces. ArtRebels are a really clever design team. In this project I have experienced their strong conceptual and graphical skills."
Are there any surprises that you're allowed to tell us about??
"In this up-tempo process we make a lot of change all the time and therefore I do not want to make any announcements yet. The biggest surprise will be the work from our secret local artists… maybe you can get the inside story from them?"
What do you think it will add to the hostel? Will it be the best designer bar in Copenhagen?
"Yes, and I think the new space will attract more Copenhageners to use the Hostel as a partying space. Hopefully it will generate lots of new friendships between locals and guests visiting Denmark."
We hope so! Thank you Betina, we can’t wait to see the finished project.
Don't forget the opening party is 1st May and everyone is invited! We have live performances from girl band the Gabriellas, free champagne and food buffet, happy hour and live DJs until 5am. Check out our facebook page for more information
